Bench Press

Bench Press

Benchpress performed with full lockout, the benchmark of pure pressing strength.

Bench Press Standards

For a benchpress to be considered valid.

  • The lifter must lie on the bench with shoulders and hips in contact
  • The bar must be lowered to the Chest.
  • The lifter must press the bar upward until the arms are fully extended

A lift is invalid if:

  • the bar does not touch the Chest
  • The arms do not reach full lockout

Visualizing Depth

Executing a proper bench press requires maintaining full body control and correct positioning throughout the lift. The bar must lower steadily until it makes clear contact with the chest, while the shoulders and hips remain firmly in contact with the bench and feet stay flat on the floor. Judges will closely observe control, bar path, and full lockout of the arms to determine if the lift is valid.
